“OMI pays tribute to the police with ‘To Serve and Protect’” by Jamaica Gleaner

Singer OMI is out on the scene again with the release of his new single, To Serve and Protect, a tribute to police officers. According to the recording artiste, this song preceded his recording career.

‘This so happens to be one taken from the ‘vault’,” he said. “This was recorded years ago. It’s just one of those songs that had to be written. But, we were waiting for the appropriate time for it to be released. A very important factor in this business is timing, careful planning and execution – especially when you are dealing with a sensitive topic that will provoke negative and positive thoughts.”

The Cheerleader singer said his life was the inspiration for the song. ‘The inspiration behind writing this song came from the fact that I’ve lived it. This was a part of my journey. Music is a universal language that transcends all barriers and pulls all cultures together. As an artiste, I am inspired daily to use my skills to articulate and communicate life’s circumstances and experiences. My life experiences will continue to inspire me to positively influence our community and our country.”

LOCAL VIDEO SHOOT

The accompanying video was very important to the singer, who wanted it done a particular way. “Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon and I gave our directives for this video, and held firmly to them because something like this had to be done right, so I guess it’s official… we are directors now.” he joked.

The video is the first that the artiste has shot locally. “It was a great experience filming in Jamaica, I felt right at home. In all seriousness, I know I am taking a bold step to highlight the great work of our police force that, most times, are hidden or seen through a clouded lens. After all, crime, violence and law enforcement are never a welcome conversation. But I think if we also celebrate the police force for serving and protecting us, the conversation becomes balanced versus one sided –- and our little brothers and sisters will get an alternate view other than fear. Therefore, it was important to show up on set, even if I was not in the scenes, just to show my support and admiration for the ‘first responders’. It was fun and humbling.”

To show his support, OMI shared that he will be setting up a foundation to help our first responders.

Since the success of his monster triple-platinum-selling hit Cheerleader in 2015, OMI has been busy working on several projects. Last year, he teamed up with Shaggy on the song Seasons. He also collaborated with Felix Jaehn on the song Masterpiece. I Found a Girl, featuring The Vamps, became OMI’s third hit on the British pop charts.

He told The Gleaner, “Wow, since Cheerleader I have been up to a lot of touring. We did a world tour and now have two singles out – Masterpiece and As Long as I’m With You, so the work never stops. I’m now leaving in a few days for a writing camp in London, Stockholm and Denmark, which will be followed by a tour in Australia and Asia.” He is currently working on his follow-up album to Me 4 U, which he hopes to release early next year.

[INTERVIEW_BILLBOARD]: OMI Talks Return to Music, Premieres New Record ‘Masterpiece’

Interview, OMI, Pop, Release

” Well-known for his No.1 Hot 100 record, “Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix),” Jamaican artist OMI returns from his hiatus with another feel-good collab, “Masterpiece,” alongside German producer Felix Jaehn. The uptempo, summery track encourages women to find beauty in themselves as they are, in a digital age that often pushes the other way.

The multi-platinum pair connected in London for their first in-person studio session. In hopes of recreating the magic that topped the charts in over 50 countries on Me 4 U, OMI & Jaehn aimed for a radio-friendly earworm. With the foot-tapping chorus, “Cos every time I look at you I’m looking at a masterpiece/ If you’re trying to be perfect, you don’t have to be,” OMI’s knack for riveting global blends prevails.

Billboard caught up with OMI to discuss what his next chapter means sonically, why he is a fan of his fans and the importance of protecting what is sacred. Check out what’s been going on behind the scenes with the Kingston sensation, as “Masterpiece,” leads into his second offering. […]”

“BTS WITH OMI” Interview with FLAUNT

“High above the Los Angeles skyline and tucked away in the San Gabriel Mountains, I find myself on set of Omi’s newest music video. As I am chatting over blueberries with Ultra Music representatives and foreign models, I can’t help but reminisce about Omi’s legacy – his chart-topping, remixed single, ‘Cheerleader,’ that reigned the summer of 2015. It was the summer jam that was trapped in our minds and played on an endless loop on every radio station.  Following the release of ‘Cheerleader’, we weren’t left with much from the Jamaican artist. I even considered him to fall victim to the curse of “one-hit-wonders”. But, to my ignorance, I shortly discovered how wrong I was. […]”

New York, NY– VP Records artist Spiritual has released the video for ‘Stand Up to Rasta’, the first single off his debut album “Awakening”.   Shot in various parts of New York City (Queens, Brooklyn), the video sends the message of staying true to one’s self despite pressures to mold into the corporate world. Directed by A1 Vision, the video has no shortage of beautiful shots of New York City’s landscape and Spiritual’s energetic and bold energy.

Symbolism is displayed throughout the video, as what looks to be a simple game of chess, represents much more. His opponent is a standard business man who seemingly plays by “the rules”, while Spiritual carefully plans his moves with thoughtful introspection to show the strategic way in which he navigates day to day within “the system.”

The video being filmed in New York, the city of dreams, illustrated that even in a city where everyone wants to be successful it is essential to still stand up for your beliefs. After outwitting his opponent, they shake hands, emphasizing Spiritual’s humble nature.

Spiritual’s effortless style of reggae is reminiscent to the Bob Marley era as his songs deliver messages that are poignant and deep. His album “Awakening” produced by Oufah Music (Shabba Ranks, Omi), blends his desire to help those around him with his infinite passion for music.

“I’m really excited about this new video, it was a very interesting and educating experience and I’m very happy to not only write and sing for my people, but to be able to give them a true and honest video performance,” said Spiritual abut shooting ‘Stand up to Rasta.’

Spiritual recently held his first performance in New York City at a VP Records New Artist Showcase on May 18th. As the headliner of the show, he wowed the audience with a four-song set including ‘Stand up to Rasta’ and ‘African Glory.’

VP Records artist Spiritual has released the video for ‘Time has Come’, the second single off his debut album “Awakening” produced by Oufah Music (Shabba Ranks, Omi). The video portrays Spiritual narrating a story about a troubled man looking for escape after he purloins tapes from reggae archives. The man gets confronted by a preacher along the way, but just when he believes his quest is successful, he is confronted by Spiritual.

Filmed in the country sides of Jamaica, the visual is parallel to the poignant lyrics of the song, as it showcases images of mothers, fathers and everyday working folks who have worry but also hope in their eyes. Crooning “When I see people out there crying, I cry too, when I see people out there suffering, I suffer too,” his empathy and love for helping people is evident in the video and is testimony to his identity as a whole.

“I’m really impressed with this new video, and the feedback I’m getting is really inspirational which makes me want to keep on this journey, said Spiritual. “I am for the people and this kind of response to the work we are doing shows that we definitely cannot stop. I appreciate and thank all who took part in the making of the video. This is for all humanitarian, peace loving people, Raspect,” Spiritual concluded.

First Listen: Spiritual – Awakening

January 22, 2017 by Admin

Spiritual

It’s not often that the music styles of old find renewed life through generations of singers; sometimes, though, our ears are blessed by something deeper than the edits that time forces upon art forms, something pure and resonant that has a lasting impression. This is a spiritual sort of moment, when a modern voice carries an ancient honesty and a hunger that’s not teachable in a training session or capable of being tweaked out of the magic of a studio appointment.

Spiritual is an artist whose cries of hope come honorably. Having been born in the Allman Town area of Jamaica, he was orphaned as a young child. Once he was able to, he worked to aid the impoverished of his community, now bringing the wisdom of those raw experiences to his art and showcasing them with a humble knowing on his debut album, “Awakening”.

Spiritual is an impactful artist, through the power of his skill as a wordsmith and the warming soak of his auditory ambush – a vocalist who taps into veins that ring, at times, of both Burning Spear and Culture’s Joseph Hill (Rest in Peace, Rasta!), while remaining unique in its own regard. The sound is one of both homage to the necessary DNA of Roots Reggae and recognition that new branches sometimes bear the strongest fruit.
