Interview with Spiritual

Collectors of Alborosie’s unstoppable run of early singles will remember Marathon: a 2008 collaboration with a singer whose wood-smoked, nasal tone recalled Burning Spear and Culture’s Joseph Hill. That man is Spiritual and he releases his overdue second album Awakening through VP Records on February 3rd.

Awakening contains 14 tracks produced by Clifton “Specialist” Dillon, Bobby Digital and Horace Chin, featuring a raft of top musicians including Sly Dunbar, Robbie Lyn, Horsemouth Wallaceand the late Nambo Robinson. All songs sound like they could have been recorded in the latter 70s – were it not for appearances by the equally ancient-sounding voices of Droop Lion and Iba Mahr.

A teacher and community organiser as well as a singer, Spiritual conversed with Reggaeville about growing up an orphan at the feet of West Kingston’s greatest music stars. He explained how his Rasta messages are inspired by his passion for good works; noted the significance of particular numbers in his life; and warned that he has a third album soon to come.

Jamaica Observer: Following his performance at VP Records’ New Artiste showcase at Milk River in Brooklyn, New York last Thursday, singer Spiritual is keen to make 2017 his breakthrough year. The showcase for music industry executives also featured performances by Addis Pablo, Prince Royal and Mark Balet who did songs from their latest projects.

This was Spiritual’s first performance in New York. He said the response was more than he anticipated.

“The reception was warm and accepting. The energy from the people made me want to keep the message from Jah flowing,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

Spiritual is managed by veteran impresario Clifton “Specialist” Dillion, whose track record includes gold and platinum albums and songs by Mad Cobra, Shabba Ranks, Patra, and OMI.

Spiritual’s performance included the songs T ime Has Come, Ethiopia, Want No More, and Stand Up To Rasta from his debut album Awakening.

“The objective of the showcase was to introduce me as a new artiste so that the world could hear my message through the small congregation. I was very pleased with the achievement because everyone in attendance showed me great and positive love.”

Spiritual’s latest single is Stand Up To Rasta, which is produced by Dillion.

Born Horace Chin, Spiritual is from the central Kingston community of Allman Town.

“I was given the name Spiritual from my youth, from the people around me when they saw me as a spiritual leader. I was always preaching the word of Jah in and around the community and the name stuck with me since then,” he said.

A video for Stand Up To Rasta was filmed in New York City.

New York, NY– VP Records artist Spiritual has released the video for ‘Stand Up to Rasta’, the first single off his debut album “Awakening”.   Shot in various parts of New York City (Queens, Brooklyn), the video sends the message of staying true to one’s self despite pressures to mold into the corporate world. Directed by A1 Vision, the video has no shortage of beautiful shots of New York City’s landscape and Spiritual’s energetic and bold energy.

Symbolism is displayed throughout the video, as what looks to be a simple game of chess, represents much more. His opponent is a standard business man who seemingly plays by “the rules”, while Spiritual carefully plans his moves with thoughtful introspection to show the strategic way in which he navigates day to day within “the system.”

The video being filmed in New York, the city of dreams, illustrated that even in a city where everyone wants to be successful it is essential to still stand up for your beliefs. After outwitting his opponent, they shake hands, emphasizing Spiritual’s humble nature.

Spiritual’s effortless style of reggae is reminiscent to the Bob Marley era as his songs deliver messages that are poignant and deep. His album “Awakening” produced by Oufah Music (Shabba Ranks, Omi), blends his desire to help those around him with his infinite passion for music.

“I’m really excited about this new video, it was a very interesting and educating experience and I’m very happy to not only write and sing for my people, but to be able to give them a true and honest video performance,” said Spiritual abut shooting ‘Stand up to Rasta.’

Spiritual recently held his first performance in New York City at a VP Records New Artist Showcase on May 18th. As the headliner of the show, he wowed the audience with a four-song set including ‘Stand up to Rasta’ and ‘African Glory.’

VP Records artist Spiritual has released the video for ‘Time has Come’, the second single off his debut album “Awakening” produced by Oufah Music (Shabba Ranks, Omi). The video portrays Spiritual narrating a story about a troubled man looking for escape after he purloins tapes from reggae archives. The man gets confronted by a preacher along the way, but just when he believes his quest is successful, he is confronted by Spiritual.

Filmed in the country sides of Jamaica, the visual is parallel to the poignant lyrics of the song, as it showcases images of mothers, fathers and everyday working folks who have worry but also hope in their eyes. Crooning “When I see people out there crying, I cry too, when I see people out there suffering, I suffer too,” his empathy and love for helping people is evident in the video and is testimony to his identity as a whole.

“I’m really impressed with this new video, and the feedback I’m getting is really inspirational which makes me want to keep on this journey, said Spiritual. “I am for the people and this kind of response to the work we are doing shows that we definitely cannot stop. I appreciate and thank all who took part in the making of the video. This is for all humanitarian, peace loving people, Raspect,” Spiritual concluded.
